Oral history from Grandma Barr - 1870's Indian encounter at the dugout

In the winter, sometime in the late 1870's, my great-grandfather Ender, future father of Anna (my Grandma Barr), was called to go to Fort Hartsuf as there was a possible Indian uprising or conflict. He left his wife and infant child in the dugout home. The dugout had a blanket for the door. While great grandfather was away, a hungry Indian came to the dugout and entered their living area, carrying a gun. When he saw the mother and baby he pointed the gun down to the ground. He was given some bread and he left. In the morning Grandma Ender could see in the snow where the Indian had slept, just outside her doorway. He was gone.
