Oral history from Grandma Barr - 1880's Indian encounter at River Ranch
On the family homestead known as River Ranch outside of Elba, Nebraska, where my mom grew up and where my mom's mother, Anna ("Annie") Ender Barr grew up before her, there occurred an event in the mid 1880's that almost sounds like an "urban legend." According to family history, my grandmother was a little girl (which would date this story around 1887). In the kitchen of their framed house was a big table. The Ender clan was gathered at the house as there were reports of Indians in the area. They had just butchered a pig on the table and it was all bloody. They decided to dress up the pig in clothes and then they covered it with a sheet. When the Indians came, the clan was gathered around this "corpse". This frightened the Indians. They were given some bread and they left the house, never to be seen again.
