The "Our Song" or "Our Tune" Phenomenon

This 1945 magazine advertisement for the Crosley (known more for its radio) is an example of the idea that a song might have such strong associations that it gets designated as a couple's song, the "Our Song" or "Our Tune" phenomenon. It's music that is remembered for a particular reason. "Remember?" says the ad.

Note the image (above, left) of the man holding the record and gazing at it while his wife, positioned slightly lower, looks adoring up at him. It's a positioning that can be seen in many other advertisements. On the right is the CD cover for the three CD set by TIME LIFE, titled "They're Playing Our Song" which featured 36 hits by various artists playing "great romantic standards."

This book cover is the FIRESIDE THEATRE BOOK CLUB hardback edition of the script of THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG by NEIL SIMON, MARVIN HAMLISCH & CAROLE BAYER SAGER, 1980.
